Wayne Weekly “Springing Ahead of Spring”

Written by on February 24, 2017

Who doesn’t welcome the warmer weather we’re experiencing in February? Perhaps the local ski resorts, or snowmobilers. Understandable. But for most of us it’s just got to be springtime…right?

I saw a Robin last week, and it wasn’t even that warm. He was in a large arborvitae in our yard. I was sure “spring is busting out all over”, as the song goes. Then yesterday and today’s temperature went soaring and I went singing! Actually, I know better. Winter doesn’t officially end until March 19 season-wise. In our neck of the woods in New York, more like May (though I was born on May 15 and I recall a few birthdays with snow).

I recall when I came to know the Lord Jesus as my Savior in the first part of May about 45 years ago now. At 19 years old I rode my “English” bicycle up to the top of a local cemetery and began to read the Bible with comprehension. As I remember it was a beautiful day and I sat beneath a pine tree and read the gospel of Matthew. Returning to the same spot the following day, I began to read the gospel of John. By the time I finished chapter 3…I was a new creature in Christ!

The Jesus People were making the news in those days. I was excited that other young people discovered Jesus…and even wrote and recorded music that I could connect with. The coming of Christ was written all over everything. Back in the early seventies we were all so sure that Jesus was coming within 24 hours. That really fueled some fire!

Now, all these years later we’re still looking for His coming as He promised. That’s what He wants us to do…be watching.

Back in my baby Christian days I really wondered if I would make it to my 25th birthday. I did…and then some! I guess in the excitement of my new found faith I was springing ahead in my eschatology!

The tendency to “spring ahead” at the first sign is not uncommon, whether it be a robin, or “perilous times”. But we should always be looking for the return of Jesus, the “blessed hope” that will come as a robin…in the air!

2 Peter 3:4-7

They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water. By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.
