You’ve probably heard the cliché, “Are we having fun yet?” That’s the kind of thing you say when you go to an amusement park and end up sicker than a dog because you rode the “Himalaya Bob” ride with your daughter…right after lunch!
I like having fun. You like having fun. But “fun” is often more fun when we’re not planning a “fun-filled day”. Fun can just be sporadic.
This past Memorial Day week-end for me was not fun. Well, maybe a little at times. Oh, sure, the weather had a large bearing on that. But it just seemed that I was looking for fun like one looks for a needle in a haystack. Maybe I was trying too hard to find fun. Maybe I was looking in all the wrong places. I was mentally declaring, “this is going to be a fun holiday week-end…whether I like it or not!”
OK, I mentioned the weather already. Next was my wife’s trip to the ER. Glad to report she’s OK. We went out to eat a few times. The food was OK, but seemed to cost too much. I didn’t sleep well so I was tired and a bit cranky. My brother and his wife cancelled their annual Memorial Day picnic, so I threw some burgers on the grill and drank some sweet tea while trying to churn up a picnic spirit. That fell short. Now it’s over and I can’t go back and try harder to have fun.
Well, Lord, you’re not finished with me yet, but time is fleeting and I’m very much still a diamond in the rough.
Hey, what’s this? The sun is out! What a great day to be alive. Go, go, go, I always say. Here I come, Mr. Fun.
