A Vessel of Hope: Mary Nelson’s Journey from Grief to Community Healing

In Mary’s own words: “A decade ago, I was reeling from the death of my nephew Darryl, who was like my son. Darryl was the victim of a homicide, and after his death, I worked through my pain and despair by searching for a way to stop the cycle of violence in our community. I still believe that education is the key to ending these tragedies, and I still find hope and through my faith that we will find a way to let our youths know that we as adults are committed to them and their peaceful education.”

Mary Nelson, a vessel from God, as she views herself, is a true and committed mom, sister, aunt, cousin and good friend. A humble woman, she shows love and support in countless ways to all. By her example and mandate, she encourages others to pay it forward by giving to others in order to make communities and our nation a better place.
