Wayne Weekly “Tracking UFOs”

As a young Christian growing up in the 70’s, I was encouraged to live out my newly found faith by listening to contemporary Christian artist, Larry Norman. Larry is with his Savior now, but the memories of his music and the effects of that music live on in me as a part of my Christian experience.

Larry, as now I look back on his music, was quite radical for the church standard. Some of his LP cuts (for those of you who may not have been on earth very long LP means “long play”, just another designation for vinyl record albums) were creative, but could be downright out of the ordinary and often over the edge of mainstream Christian contemporary music surfacing in that decade.

As I thought about this morning’s duty of taking my families two dogs for their AM walk, I remembered watching them as they sniffed intensely at unidentified footprint objects (UFOs) in the snow. They were “on the sent” and the drive to sniff out their mysterious trail intruder was all they could think about. They were oblivious to the world around them and to my vain calls of “this way, this way”.

Now somehow that remembrance led to recall the Larry Norman song about an Unidentified Flying Object. That song was not about a mysterious space craft from another world, but Larry’s album cut song, UFO, about the Lord’s coming back. A portion of those lyrics go:

He’s an unidentified flying object
He will sweep down from the sky
He’s an unidentified flying object
some will sleep but will not die
He’s an unidentified flying object
coming back to take you home
He’s an unidentified flying object
He will role away your stone

Well, here I am some 40 years after I initially heard the song and I still wait to hear the “sound of the trump”. I don’t pose the question “where is the promise of His coming?”, because I know He’s coming back. I know that someday, whether living or dead, the clouds will come, the trump will sound, and my transformed body will get on board and I will meet, not an unidentified flying object, but my identified Savior face to face. “‘Yes, I am coming quickly.’ Amen. Come Lord Jesus.” (Rev. 22:20)
