Wayne Weekly “Time Flies…Having Fun or Not”

Just yesterday I had a stand-still-moment. It was when I realized that it was Thursday already! “Gasp, I just came off the week-end and I’ll be on another in just a day!”
The time compression started really a few years ago when one day while shaving I was struck by these words, “Hey, I just did this!” Yes, like everyone experiences the days seem to fly right by as we grow older….but lately…
I’m not altogether sure why. Some say it’s because the longer we live the time is just a smaller piece of our accumulated years. Perhaps it’s a brain thing…you know neurons firing differently…or not at all! But the truth of the matter is time flies whether we’re having fun or not.
God’s Word has much to say about the brevity of life, here are just a few:
“…a wind that passes and does not return.” Psalm 78:39
“…a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.” James 4:14
“…our days on earth are as a shadow.” Job 8:9
If that is all is said of this life, it would not be too encouraging. However we don’t live these seemingly short years for nothing and without hope and purpose. Look at these verses…
“The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever…” Psalm 138:8
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11
Those verses make life worth living out every moment with purpose and joy!
As a young Christian I recall the title of an album by early contemporary Christian musician Larry Norman, “Only Visiting this Planet”. Well we are, but it’s good to know our lives are truly in God’s hands…
“…I have written your name on the palms of my hands.” Isaiah 49:16
